Rapid Fire Main Rehabilitation For Cardinal Health

When Cardinal Health needed to refurbish a 40-year-old fire main at their Irish headquarters, traditional excavation wasn’t an option, as tree roots, a transformer room, and cost constraints made it unfeasible. OVERVIEW

Sanivar have recently completed the refurbishment of a Fire Main operating at 12 bar for multinational health care services company Cardinal Health at their Irish headquarters in Tullamore.

Working with Dyno-Rod, the project’s main aim for Cardinal Health was to re line a 40-year year old asset with recent burst history to maintain the integrity of a sprinkler system using 250 mm SaniTube®. 

CHALLENGES

The existing fire main ran adjacent to established trees and under a transformer room meaning that replacement or open excavation was not really an option both in terms of cost and environmental considerations.

By using SaniTube® we were able to keep access to minimal civil footprints equating to 2msq at launch and reception pits, furthermore SaniTube® provided an opportunity to define an exact length allowing for the connection to onward infrastructure including pressure valves.

OUTCOME

A quick and efficient installation of the system was completed across two shifts, including pressure testing and connections to onward infrastructure. 

The Fire Main could remain live throughout the installation process through the use of a simple bypass arrangement. Because of SaniTube®’s unique ‘pull through’ installation process no curing time was involved. 

The installation for this project has mitigated the possibility of recurring bursts, and through its robust construction and pressure rating has provide a 50 year extension to asset life. SaniTube® provided the only viable solution for this project due to:
